Background
In 2024, Solidaridad Indonesia commissioned a policy research brief to strengthen the evidence base for improving sustainability in Indonesia’s palm oil industry. The work built on the Power of Voice Roadmap and addressed longstanding barriers to the adoption of Indonesia Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) certification, particularly challenges tied to the Cultivation Registration Certificate (STDB) scheme and its digital transition to e-STDB.
Objectives
To provide evidence-based recommendations that advance sustainability and traceability in Indonesia’s palm oil sector. The brief analyzed STDB implementation barriers, reviewed the policy and regulatory landscape, examined relevant best practices and case studies, and produced actionable recommendations to support ISPO adoption at scale.
