BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT FOR A SEAWEED ENTERPRISE IN ROTE NDAO
COMMUNITY-BASED BUSINESS TRAINING
Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN)
Agriculture, Forestry, & Fishery
Capacity Building - Business Activation
Background
Since 2015, YKAN has been supporting seaweed farmers in Rote Ndao to improve the livelihoods of coastal communities while promoting environmental conservation. As part of this initiative, YKAN established the local organization Pelita Kasih and set up the Kios Konservasi (Conservation Kiosk). An organizational assessment found that Pelita Kasih had limited capacity to manage the Kios Konservasi as a professional business. Following a business activation training, Pelita Kasih decided not to directly operate the Kios Konservasi, instead delegating its management to another party while positioning itself as a strategic partner. As a result, i-Hi Consulting was engaged to provide technical assistance in activating and professionally managing the Kios Konservasi.
Objectives
To activate the Kios Konservasi in Rote Ndao as both a conservation learning centre and a sustainable seaweed business. It focused on establishing a professional business entity, strengthening governance and organizational capacity, piloting the Kios Konservasi as a seaweed off-taker, and promoting the adoption of YKAN’s Seaweed Best Management Practices (BMP) among local farmers.
